Editor's Comment:

Summary of spring sales late but will set scene for exciting fall season

07-10-09

As the fall 2007 auction season approaches in Canada it seems perhaps a little late to be bringing you a summary of the recent spring series of sales. However, while we had intended to publish these earlier they will still provide an excellent platform from which to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the coming season. And what a season it is shaping up to be. Heffel has once again laid down the gauntlet with an exceptional sale set for November 23rd and is the only salesroom thus far to have published their complete catalogue. With Sotheby’s/Ritchies sale set for November 19th, and Joyner Waddington’s the next day, November 20th and 21st, it won’t be long before all the catalogues are ready and a full assessment of the season can be made.

Will this fall season be the prelude to a twelfth consecutive market gain for Canadian art? If Heffel’s catalogue is anything to go by it most certainly could be. What is for sure is that we are in for another exciting season, another spate of auction records, and continued strength in an already very strong Canadian market. Stay tuned!
