This silkscreen print is from Group C of the Wartime Prints series produced in 1943 by Sampson-Matthews Ltd. in collaboration with The National Gallery of Canada and sponsored by the Art Gallery of Toronto/National Gallery of Canada. Historically important in the growth, development and acceptance of Canadian art, the Sampson-Matthews Project was launched during the Second World War and continued with the support of the National Gallery of Canada through to the mid-1950s. The original paintings from which the silkscreens were created were produced specifically for this project by many of Canada&'s leading artists of the day. Although the original print runs of many of these silkscreens were never very large to begin with, the ravages of time have ensured that there are today few of these fine images still available in exhibitable condition.
