This work is an excellent 19th century copy by a competent but unknown hand of Sir Joshua Reynold's "The Holy Family and the Infant St. John."
Reynold's "Holy Family" was painted c.1788-89 towards the end of his life, and was acquired by the National Gallery in 1830 and transferred to the Tate Gallery, London, in 1949. Several copies of this magnificent work are known to exist, some having found their way in prominent institutions such as the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford.
