Biography of ALISTAIR MACREADY BELL

BELL, Alistair Macready  ARCA, BCSA, CGPA, CPE, CSGA  (1913-1997).  Born in Darlington, England, Bell came to Toronto in 1922. Largely self-taught, he is known for his drawings, watercolours, etchings, lithographs and woodblock prints of landscapes, harbour scenes and animals, especially birds. Moving to British Columbia in 1929, Bell studied life drawing at the Vancouver School of Art under B.C. Binning and later etching and lithography at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London (1959). He spent 1960 travelling in Great Britain, the Netherlands, France and Italy. His landscapes were influenced by Kokoschka, Beckmann, Nolde, Bonnard and Cezanne. His work is represented at the NGC, CCAB, ROM, MMANYC and VAM.  He exhibited with the MMFA in 1955 and the RCA in 1968 and 1970.
