Biography of STEPHEN LESKARD

LESKARD, Stephen (Waclaw Stefan Maciej Liszkowski)  FCA  (1921-  ).  Born in Lublin, Poland, Leskard studied at the Edinburgh University College of Art (1943); at St. Martin’s School of Art, London (1945-48); London University (1946-47); at the Polish College of Art, London (1947-49); and at Capilano College, North Vancouver (photography 1971-72; bronze casting 1980-82). He lived in Romania (1939-40), France (1940), Great Britain (1940-44, 1945-49), Belgium and The Netherlands (1945), before immigrating to Ontario (1949-52) and settling in British Columbia in 1952. He later travelled in Spain and Italy (1976), France (1978), and Turkey and Greece (1980, 1982). Leskard works in several mediums including oil, pastel, watercolour, ink, charcoal and pencil; linocuts, etching and aquatint; and bronze sculpture. His work displays a geometric formalism. He worked as a commercial artist and taught at the Vancouver School of Art (1954-55) and at Capilano College (1969-1980s). He changed his name in 1960. He held solo exhibitions of his work at UBC in 1963 and 1965. His work is in the collection of the NAC.
