Biography of ALLEN SAPP (KISKAYETUM)

SAPP, Allen (Kiskayetum) RCA, OC (1929-active 2003). Born on the Red Pheasant Reserve, near North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Sapp studied briefly under Wynona Mulcaster (1960s), but considers himself self-taught. Working mainly in acrylic, but also in watercolour, pencil, crayon and pastel in a somewhat naive, narrative style, his subjects include the everyday life and culture of the Northern Plains Cree. He incorporates landscape, portraits, Cree legends, dreams and daily activities such as chopping wood, duck hunting, making dinner, and playing hockey. He received a Canada Council award in 1969, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Regina, Saskatchewan in 1998. He is active in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. He held solo exhibitions at the MAG in 1969 and 1970, and NMAG in 1994. His work is in the collections of the CCAB, CMC, GM, MAG, MCMC, NBM, NMAG, SAB and TBAG.
