Biography of GEORGE WILLIAM BATES

BATES, George William  CSMA, FCA  (1930- ).  Born in London, England, Bates moved to Canada in 1954 and settled in Vancouver in 1956. Self-taught, his approach to painting draws from both the realist and impressionist traditions. He has been influenced by such artists as John Singer Sargent, Alfred Sisley, Montague Dawson and Norman Wilkins. He is predominantly a boat and marine artist painting scenes of Vancouver and the West Coast of British Columbia in oil. He also paints landscapes, and still life. He has travelled across Europe and North America.
