Biography of WALTER JOSEPH GERARD BACHINSKI

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Bachinski is best known for his figure drawings, prints and figurative sculpture. He studied drawing and painting at the Ontario College of Art from 1961-65 where he also worked with Frederick Hagan in printmaking. He studied under Maurico Lasansky at the University of Iowa (1965-67) and received a Masters degree in printmaking. In 1967 he began teaching at the University of Guelph. In 1978-79, Bachinski lived and worked in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, France where he began to work in pastels. He returned to France in 1982, 1986 and travelled to Italy (1987), Spain, England and Mexico (1972, 1989 and 1990). Much of his sculpture is cast from clay originals in ciment fondu and patinated to look like bronze. He exhibited with the RCA in 1976. His work is represented in the MMFA, CCAB and the Uffizi, Florence.
