Biography of JOSEPH ERNEST SAMPSON
SAMPSON, Joseph Ernest ARCA, ALC, CSPWC, OSA (1887-1946). Born in Liverpool, England, Sampson studied at the Liverpool School of Art, England; and under Jean Paul Laurens at the Julian Academy, Paris, France. He came to Toronto, Ontario in 1909. Working in oil, watercolour, silkscreen and gouache, his subjects include freighters, interiors, portraits, landscape, and figures. He painted in Jasper National Park, Alberta; in Kearney, Ontario; and the Gaspé, Quebec, as well as for the Canadian War Records in 1918. He was a commercial artist, co-founder and President of Sampson and Matthews Ltd., Toronto (1918-1946). He was also President of the ALC (1938-1940). He died in York Mills, Ontario. He exhibited with the RCA in 1913-1946, and the AAM in 1927, and his work is in the collection of the AGO.
