Biography of PETER E. ROBINSON

Born in Montreal, Peter Robinson studied art under Arthur Lismer at McGill University, but graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. His love for the sea prompted him, at age 24, to join the Royal Canadian Navy and for eight years he travelled the world. During this time he observed and painted, but his subject was always the sea. Leaving the Navy he returned to engineering but continued to paint, all the while refining his technique in oils. In 1971 he moved to Vancouver Island and began painting full time. In 1983 he held an exhibition of marine paintings at the Vancouver Maritime Museum entitled The History of the Royal Navy in British Columbia. The following year he held another exhibition at the Museum that focussed on the history of Canada's Northwest Passage. Although primarily known as a marine artist, Robinson also painted the Canadian landscape.
