Biography of ERNEST LUTHI

LUTHI, Ernest (Ernie) (1906-1983). Born in Zeebach, Switzerland, Luthi came to Punnichy, Saskatchewan in 1914 and studied illustration by corres-pondence through the Washington School of Art, Washington, D.C. (1920s) and evenings at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh (1926-1928). Working in oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel, charcoal, pencil and ink, his subjects include Prairie harvest scenes, flower studies and landscape especially in the Qu’Appelle Valley. He worked most of his life as a sign painter, carpenter and farmer, painting full-time since 1951. He stopped painting in 1981, and died two years later in Punnichy, Saskatchewan. Luthi received an honorary doctorate from the University of Regina in 1975. A memorial exhibit of his paintings was held at the NMAG in 1984. His work is in the collections of the MAG, NMAG and SAB.
