Biography of MATVIY VAISBERG

The founder of the ‘rearguard’ movement, Matviy Vaisberg was born in 1958 in Kyiv. He studied at Shevchenko Secondary School of Arts, in the studios of O. Abramov and E. Semenov. Soon after graduation, Vaisberg continued his studies at the Ukrainian Poligraphy Institute for the department of book illustration, in M. Valuyenko’s studio. Vaisberg is known for laying the groundwork for the ‘rearguard’ movement in Kyiv that developed its intellectual aesthetics in the 1980s within the late-Soviet and early-Ukrainian postmodernism. According to Vaisberg, “rearguard - the consistently figurative, narrative and dramatic art, anthropological and personalistic in its tendencies, existential and tragic in its world-perception, defines humanitarian values”. He currently lives and works in Kyiv, and his works are exhibited and collected around the world.
