Biography of FRANK LEONARD BROOKS

BROOKS, Frank Leonard  RCA, OSA, CGP, CPE, CSGA  (1911-2011).  Born in London, England, Brooks studied at the Toronto Central Technical School (1929) and at the Ontario College of Art under Frank Johnston. He travelled and painted in England, France, Spain (1933-34), New York and the Great Lakes. He returned to Toronto to teach at the Northern Vocational School. He participated in many exhibitions including the Canadian Section of the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. Brooks was an official war artist in 1944. After his discharge, he moved to Mexico (1947) where he developed an abstract style using collage, acrylic, watercolour, oil and casein. He also travelled to Greece (1967) and Italy (1971). His work is represented in the AGO, NGC, CWM and the Mexico City Museum of Modern Art. He exhibited several oil and watercolour landscapes with the RCA from 1936 to 1948 and the AAM in 1941.
