Biography of JOHN M. HORTON

HORTON, John M.  CSMA, FCA  (1935- ). Born in Poole, Dorset, England, Horton studied at the Poole School of Art, Bournemouth School of Art and Wimbledon College of Art. He also studied naval architecture. After serving in the Royal Navy (1951-60), he worked as a designer with Frederick Sage of London. He came to Canada in 1964, and settled in British Columbia where he sailed his converted fishing boat along the BC coast. Working in oil and acrylic, he is best known for his marinescapes including both historical scenes and contemporary fishing fleets. His work is technically accurate and highly realistic. He also produces limited edition lithographs. Horton was the first President of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists and is also a member of the Nautical Institute. He has exhibited with the Royal Society of Marine Artists and at the Royal Academy.
