Biography of MARCELLE FERRON

FERRON, Marcelle (Mrs. René Hamelin)  RCA, AANFM, CAPQ, CAS, SAPQ,  (1924-2001).  Born in Louiseville, Quebec, Ferron studied under Jean-Paul Lemieux and Simone Hudon at l’École des Beaux-Arts, Quebec City (1941-42); with Paul-Emile Borduas at l'École du Meuble, Montreal (1945-48); engraving under Stanley W. Hayter in Paris (1957-59); and stained glass with Michel Blum, Paris (1963-65). She returned to Montreal permanently in 1965 except for a trip to China (1977). She was an original member of the Automatistes founded by Paul-Emile Borduas in the 1940s. She is known for her Abstract Expressionist paintings in oil and acrylic as well as her etchings, serigraphs, stained glass and mixed media works. She is represented in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, NGC, MMFA, MQ, MAC and CCAB. Ferron exhibited with the RCA in 1963, 1964 and 1976 and the MMFA  in 1947, 1960 and 1963.
