Biography of ALEX SIMEON JANVIER

JANVIER, Alex Simeon RCA (1935-  ).  Born in Le Goff on the Cold Lake Indian Reservation, Alberta, Janvier studied under Illingworth Kerr, Marion Nicoll and Ron Spickett at the Alberta College of Art, Calgary (1956-1960). He is active in Edmonton and Winnipeg. His work uses traditional Chipewyan symbols such as birds, arrows and mythical figures in a modern stylized approach. His mediums include oil, watercolour, gouache, acrylic and silkscreen. Some of his work is signed with his treaty number ‘287’. He also taught at the University of Alberta, Edmonton Art Gallery and with the Edmonton City Recreation Department and worked for the Department of Indian Affairs (1966). His murals were exhibited at the Indian Pavilion, Expo 67, and can be seen at the County of Strathcona Building, Sherwood Park; and the Muttart Conservatory, Edmonton. He has held solo exhibitions with the EAG in 1973, the ROM in 1978, the NMAG in 1983 and the MAG in 1994. His paintings and prints are represented in the AAF, CCAB, CMC, GM, MCMC, MMFA and WAG.
