Biography of ROY THOMAS

THOMAS, Roy Harvey (Gahgahgeh) (1949-2004). Born in Longlac, Ontario, Thomas studied under Bob Boyer at the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College, University of Regina, Regina, Saskatchewan, but considers himself a self-taught artist. Working in acrylic, silkscreen and watercolour, he paints Algonkian legends in a contemporary style combined with a traditional Ojibway Woodland style. His subjects include such titles as 'The Birth of Wisdom', and 'Mother Earth Cares for Her Children', and feature birds and animals in black outlines and flat shapes of vibrant colour. He has worked as a truck driver, railroad worker, and guide. He held a solo exhibition at the AGO in 1993. His work is in the collection of the AGO, CMC, EAG, MCMC, NGC, ROM, TBAG, TTAG, VAG and WAG.
