 In 1980 we published the first edition of the Canadian Art Sales Index to cover the 1977-80 seasons. A quick survey – definitely not Ipsos Reid quality – told us that there were a lot of collectors of Canadian art in the market so we went ahead and published enough for everyone – and, as it turns out, everyone else and then some!
We soon learned that the Canadian art market is really not very large. In fact the number of collectors and investors actually interested in knowing prices for everything sold on the market is, indeed, very small. So we adjusted our print runs in subsequent years to accommodate this information but, like any business worth its salt, we were seduced into printing a few extra copies as the incremental cost was so low!!
Well, here we are, 28 years later, with 28 editions under our belt, plus several other publications, and we still have a few books left. Well, if truth be known, more than a few. Alright, a lot! Add to this reality the fact that, humping several boxes from one storage locker to another might not be so bad when you’re in the peak of physical fitness (or just a lot younger) but it sure sucks when you get on a bit in years and the mind says let’s do it and the body says screw you!
Bottom line! We’re fed up with moving all the *)@#%^*! boxes from one space to another. Then came the brainwave (from the same brain I might add that decided to order all the extra ‘inexpensive’ books). Why not sell them all really really cheaply and save on storage, back pain and frustration? Brilliant! The brain still works.
